According to Finnish Meteorological institute, the sea level on Kemi was measured to be -128 cm. The earlier lowest sea level measured was in 1923 -125 cm.

Sea level on the Bay of Bothnia has been dropping since Tuesday 12.1 and reached its lowest value at 14.1 Thursday 4 am, reaching the record low value -128 cm at Kemi measurement station.

North winds pressing water away from the Bay of Bothnia is the main reason for low sea level. This causes most trouble for the shipping industry.
